Surgical Hair Restoration

Plymouth Meeting Pennsylvania Surgical Hair Restoration Doctor Roy Stoller offers both the Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) surgeries for people who have significant areas of thinning hair or baldness. Although each patient’s situation is unique, Doctor Stoller typically recommends FUT for those with extensive balding on the crown or a receding hairline than is impossible to disguise. FUE may be right for you if you are just starting to notice balding areas, have a mild receding hairline, or wish to have an eyebrow or beard transplant.

FUT Surgical Hair Restoration

Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) Surgical Hair Restoration was first introduced as a surgical hair restoration option commonly known as the strip method. FUT involves removing a strip of skin with healthy hair follicles from the back of your scalp. Unlike the top of your scalp where your hair recedes and falls out in patches, the hair in the back is genetically programmed to remain attached the longest. After identifying and removing the donor strip, Roy Stoller, D.O. immediately closes the donor area in a way to minimize scarring and create a natural look.

FUT does leave a linear scar across the back of your scalp, but Dr. Stoller’s skill and experience with plastic surgery enables him to minimize scarring as much as possible. Dr. Stoller also offers many post-op treatments to further eliminate and hide any scarring that may be present after your FUT Hair Restoration Surgery has healed.

After extracting the donor strip and closing the wound, Dr. Stoller extracts the pre-determined number of hair follicles and prepares them for transfer to areas of balding or thinning hair on the top of your scalp. You will notice the growth of fuzzy new hair within two to three weeks. However, this hair falls out quickly to prepare the way for the growth of new permanent hair in approximately six months. Since the new hair growth is the same color, wave pattern, and thickness as your existing hair, it blends in seamlessly for an entirely natural appearance.

FUE Surgery with the ARTAS Robot

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Surgical Hair Restoration is a non-invasive procedure that does not leave a linear scar behind, but it is time-consuming and labor-intensive. The reason for the long procedure time is that a Hair Restoration Doctor manually extracts each individual hair follicle for transfer with a one-millimeter circular punch. This does leave small marks on the back of your scalp that disappear several days after the surgery.

Roy Stoller, D.O. uses the amazing ARTAS robotic system in his FUE follicle unit extraction surgical hair restoration procedures. Dr. Stoller programs ARTAS to identify and extract the healthiest hair follicles for transfer to the balding scalp. This dramatically reduces the total treatment time so much that patients are able to receive far more grafts in one session compared to previous methods. Another major benefit of FUE with ARTAS is that the robot removes the hair follicles in one even movement. This greatly increases the viability of each donor hair follicle as well as patient comfort during the procedure.

Using the ARTAS FUE method to extract hair follicles for transplant typically results in higher quality grafts and always provides a natural and even look. The survival rate is significantly higher for grafts obtained by ARTAS than those that a doctor removes manually. Once the transplant is complete, you can expect the same hair re-growth pattern as you would have with FUT.
